HCSKL 2010 Notes‎ > ‎

Day 43

0:45 - Stories from the weekend - healings.
5:10 - What we are about to do is what makes healing possible.
5:30 - Healing stories continued - only 2 people not healed after first prayer. No change in one fellow.

Sacrament of Communion

6:25 - Receiving Communion - Blood - the act of sin. Body - to take away the effects of sin. The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death.
7:00 - Sin has no dominion over us.
7:40 - Body - Prayer (more)
9:00 - Cup - [Explanation of the new covenant between Jesus and God] Prayer (more)
12:00 - Amen.
12:20 - Communing with Him - Take the understanding you gain in this school and commune it with Him. Meet face to face. It's a privilege we have.

Fasting - Not a Work

12:45 - Fasting - We are going to talk a little bit more about it.
13:15 - Regarding question from yesterday - Col. 2:21+ - Does Paul contradict the need to fast in this verse about self-denial? -
14:25 - In that day everything they did was so legalistic, so traditional. It was to find approval with God.
14:40 - Pharisee and tax collector - Luke 18 - Luke 18:9-14 - Pharisee: I thank you that I'm not like that man. I fast twice a week. - He is qualifying himself and judging - everything that sin has allowed us to be. I'm approved because of what I do. And if I don't see what I do in your life then you are disapproved.
15:15 - Tax collector - has sin consciousness. Beating chest and won't look up - God have mercy on me, a wretched, miserable man. There is a place for that but only for a moment at salvation. It was a works thing for the Pharisee.
15:55 - So Paul isn't saying it's wrong to fast. He's saying don't fast for the reasons that men usually fast.
16:05 - Col. 2 - v.23 - Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. - Such things have an appearance of wisdom. False humility. No value against the indulgence of the flesh.
16:40 - When you are in a religious way. "Man I am glad that I am not like that man - I fast twice a week. - He doesn't. I'm more spiritual." Wrong. Paul is saying that when you do something for that reason it has no value against the indulgence of the flesh. But the whole purpose of true Bible fasting is to crush and to bring into order the indulgence of the flesh.
17:15 - Fasting as a work - whole time dreading not eating - just making it to a point in time.
17:45 - Grace of fasting - perspective that will keep you from all that.
17:50 - You're not just trying to not eat for a week. That accomplishes little. I've seen people fast and then eat more than they ate before. And yet feel like they are doing good because they are fasting. But when they are not fasting they are eating more. They are actually feeding their appetite because of their wrong perspective of fasting.
19:00 - Todd fasting every other day and gaining weight. Routine?.
21:00 - Fasting is designed to bring the voice of the flesh into it's proper order.
21:40 - Todd fasting (cont.) - Todd's integrity. Fasting should bring everything into order not drive things out of order.
25:00 - Participant comment - Willfully ignorant - not hearing.
25:10 - Respond to little convictions - Don't give yourself permission to be willfully ignorant. Terrible thing to do is to get a little conviction over something and then ignore it. Conviction - to shine light upon. It's not condemnation. Thank God for the light upon the earth. Don't ignore little convictions. Respond.
26:00 - TODAY - Talking about the connection between prayer and fasting.
26:15 - In Col. 2 - He's talking about fasting being a work - just duty. Paul wouldn't be telling the Colossians that fasting is wrong and then in 2 Cor. 11 say that I am in fasting often - 2 Cor. 11:27. Paul is not discouraging fasting. He's discouraging that motive in fasting.

Motives in Fasting

27:00 - It feels like we need to drill that a little bit more so let's go to Is. 58.
27:25 - Religion - creates a dilemma. It walks in a form of godliness but denies the power of godliness. 2 Tim. 3:5 - Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. - Often we think as if he is writing about denying the power of God but he is actually talking about godliness - a holy life - through their inner heart - their motives. They appear to be right with God. But it's not what goes into the mouth but what comes out that defiles a man.
28:10 - So there is a dilemma here in Is. 58.
28:15 - v.1 - Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins. - Don't hold back. Don't soft pedal this. This is serious. People need to hear this. You are speaking on my behalf.
29:40 - v.2 - Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. -
Religious service - They are doing all of the right things without the change of heart. Religious duty - religious service - religious practice - on the Sabbath, they were in the temple. They were seeking Him daily in the sense of their religious traditions. But they weren't taking account of their heart and their life. For example today - being in church doesn't make you a Christian.

Calling the Pharisees to Account for Religion

30:45 - Calling the Pharisees to account in Mt. 23. Like seven "woes" - at the end - Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? - Mt. 23:33. This is serious. That kind of language is the fragrance of life to those who are being saved and death to those who are perishing - 2 Cor. 2:16. There is an accountability in that kind of truth that's going to make you or break you. It's going to call you onto the carpet and into the light and give you no excuse. That's the kind of preaching that you want. So that nobody is left in the dark. Near the end Jesus lifted his voice like a trumpet in regard to the Pharisees and spared not: That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. - Mt. 23:35. They lived seven hundred years before this was spoken. How could He say that? He's talking about a spirit - a mentality - the condition of the heart. In other words, if the Pharisees had lived in Zacharias' day, he would be just as dead and it makes them guilty of all the righteous blood ever shed. It's a religious spirit - a form - a mindset having the form without the power.
32:25 - The story of Zacharias. He cried out for change. They killed him between the temple and the altar. "I don't want my people at the temple. I want them at the altar. The alter is where they are changed. I want them repenting." Religion killed Zacharias.
34:20 - Form of godliness - The form of godliness is the worst place to be trapped. Doing things that appear to make him a Christian without the altar of repentance. Repent - remission of sin. They killed him when Zacharias cried out for them to come to the altar, not to just come to church. Spirit that gets into people that is against truth even though it hangs around truth.
35:00 - Trapped in religion - You can get trapped in religion even if you don't have an evil heart - if you don't understand works and grace - grace and law. You can fast for all the wrong reasons. You can go to church for all the wrong reasons. Read the Bible for wrong reasons. Shake yourself out of it. Don't let it come near you. Religious trap. The Pharisees were caught in it. And Jesus let them have it.

Purpose of Fasting - Clearer Perspective

36:15 - v.2 - Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God. - It seems like you have a heart for me but your life doesn't speak it. Here is where the motive comes...
36:55 - v.3 - Wherefore have we fasted, say they, and thou seest not? wherefore have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find pleasure, and exact all your labours. - They are fasting just for a breakthrough - just to find favor - for God to bless them - to approve their own conscience that is already violated. Rather than repent they are doing a religious act to qualify them - instead of really changing them. So when they are doing that and not getting results, they are frustrated. Their whole goal is self - self-centered. It's all about them.
37:35 - Purpose of fasting - You are not fasting to afflict your soul. You are fasting to bring into line the indulgence of the flesh - the voice of the carnal nature. You are fasting to get the spirit man above the carnal man - so that the voice of your spirit is what's being heard and the voice of your flesh is in line and agreement and following after like a puppy.
38:10 - War between the spirit and the flesh - Don't read Galatians 5 and give yourself permission to let there be this great battle inside of you - the war of the flesh and the spirit. We think that the spirit and the flesh are in this battle and the flesh always has to win. But the works of the flesh are obvious and evident. These two lust against each other. They battle against one another. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. - Gal. 5:17.
39:00 - Suppress the flesh - Raise up the spirit - In fasting you suppress the flesh and raise up the spirit.
39:20 - Fasting is for you - So that you get a clearer perspective with regard to healing - Fasting as a work. To get healing. No, because of the finished work of Christ. So you fast to get a clearer perspective of the sickness vs. finished work of Christ and the things of the Spirit so that you can rise up, see the situation through Christ and minister the proper authority necessary. It's for you. So that you get a clearer perspective - clearer view - breakthrough in understanding.
40:00 - Emotions around healing. Fasting helps put all of that in right perspective.
40:30 - Human affections.
40:45 - v.4 - Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high. -
41:10 - v.5 - Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? -
41:50 - Seeking acceptance through what you are doing instead of who you are.
42:10 - Comparing to one another over fasting - Condescending and strife surrounding fasting.
42:45 - Fasting puts you in touch with the reality of the finished work of Christ - Fasting is not a work that you do so that you can get results. It's the finished work of Jesus that brings results. The fasting gets you in touch with the reality of His finished work.
43:15 - Wickedness and arrogance surrounding fasting. God, I'm glad that I'm not like that man. The Pharisee had lost sight of the man's value. Tax collector goes home justified. Religion is a terrible wretched thing.

Praying Through a Fast

44:00 - v.5 - Pray your way through the fast - Afflicting your soul - no, you pray your way through the fast. The fast shouldn't be the focal point. Heart is so important in a fast.
46:45 - Voice of the flesh - It's natural for you to want the food that you see and smell during a fast. Your body has a voice. "Hello? What are you doing to me? I thought we were buds." It's not about you just covering your mouth and abstaining from food.
49:00 - Specific cravings - How do you handle that - prayer and fasting. Prayer is not just to get you through the fast. Prayer keeps you focused on why you are fasting. It's not just suffering your body. What good does that do?
50:15 - If the finished work of Christ is enough, why would I need to fast to accomplish something else? - I fast to grow in the understanding of who I have become so that the authority increases and the finger of God is more in my life. I'm fasting to see clearer - to come into the knowledge of truth.
51:00 - The Daniel fast - There is an aspect of fasting there. Abstaining from choice foods. Voice of the flesh protesting against the fast.
51:40 - When the voice of the flesh protests - Father, I so thank you for the honor of pursuing you spiritually. I thank You that You are bringing into submission the cry of my flesh and the carnal nature of man. And I thank you that there is no cry in me louder than the cry to know you and to understand. I submit myself to you. Have those little conversations.
52:30 - Prayer through hunger pangs - Habit hunger - chug a full glass of water. Make myself drink that water. I try to drink more than normal. Thank God for the health of my body and how my body is in alignment. Get a grip on the hunger through a time of prayer. Refocus on what I am doing through a time of prayer. Takes me into an intimate place. God, it's such an honor to know who you are at some level. Thank you for increasing that and revealing yourself to me. God, I am so hungry after you. I am seeking after you. And all of the sudden you are not hungry for food so much as you are hungry for Him.
53:40 - When you are fasting you are sharper and clearer than ever. You understand why you are fasting. You are so in tune with truth. I am blessed to feel that way on a regular basis but when I fast there is an increase. Why? Because you are suppressing the cries of the flesh - indulgence.
54:10 - Indulgence - Americans spoiled. All you can eat. Pampered. We've learned to live to eat. We don't have a strong discipline.
55:00 - Eating as a boy - cool whip - always ate really fast - did you get enough? - eating seconds. Cool whip - heaven on earth. Canned cherries. Earning own money - bought cool whip and cherries. I ate and ate. Cry of the flesh. Pampering yourself - no control - not self control.
1:00:50 - Participant story - fasting
1:01:40 - Daniel's fast. Delicacies.
1:02:20 - Peter and the sheet - Lord I have never put anything unclean in my mouth. Don't call what I have made clean, unclean. Talking about food and the gentiles.
1:02:50 - Daniel's fast (cont.)
1:03:05 - Not the way to pray - You pray your way through the fast - Not: God, I want that banana so bad. Please help me God. Give me grace. Take this hunger away because I really want that banana. God you've got to get me through this fast. Come on God.
1:03:25 - The prayer side union and communion. It's keeping your heart fixed on Him.
1:03:40 - Not the way to pray - We are just trying to reach a goal. But to do what? To say that you reached the goal?
1:04:00 - Participant comment - praying to have the hunger pangs disappear.
1:04:15 - You can pray for that but don't make that the focus. That's not the prayer of prayer and fasting.
1:04:20 - Purpose of prayer in prayer and fasting - Prayer keeps you attuned to why you are praying - It's OK to say, God, could you help me. I'm really struggling and I want to do this. I want to seek you. I want to grow in the things of the Spirit. Your prayer should be constantly keeping your heart and mind in line with why you are fasting. The prayer side is designed to keep you in tune with why you are fasting - lest you just be abstaining from food to reach a goal.
1:04:45 - Prayer in moment of weakness - If you feel like you can't make it and are falling apart - God, could you help me? Could you just remove this because I want to know you more. It's obvious that I have a serious cry of the flesh. This thing is trying to outweigh my cry for you. And nothing will out shout my heart to know you. That's powerful prayer. And God my heart is before you. And I'm not just trying to abstain from food because the finished work of Jesus is enough. But I must know you more. And with this kind of indulgence, with this kind of carnal cry, how will I ever live fueled by the Spirit? God, I want to live by the Spirit. That's a healthy prayer. You are putting things in their right perspective.
1:05:25 - Nurturing the voice of the flesh - And the only reason that that hunger rages so is because you have fed it and fed it and fed it. You've got that thing like a roaring furnace. You've trained it and nurtured it. And now all of the sudden you are cutting it off to build in the things that are eternal. And it's not happy.

Crankiness from Fasting

1:06:00 - Crankiness - How do you handle being irritable because of fasting? - That is something for prayer. And that arises because of the way that you are seeing the fast.
1:07:10 - Participant comment - You might not even want to fast because of it.
1:07:20 - That's the thing that God wants to kill in the fast - the right to be in that place - reserving that right to nurture the flesh. Crankiness when things don't go our way.
1:08:00 - David Hogan - discipline. They fast all the time. The whole work fasts as one - as a church. It took them into a whole other level of understanding and authority.
1:10:30 - Unity in fasting.
1:10:45 - Crankiness. Jesus wasn't cranky.
1:11:20 - Do you stop running when you fast? - I exercise a lot when I fast - walking - I don't actually jog. Maybe the first or second day but not probably after that. But stay active. The reality is you can still function.
1:12:30 - Living by the flesh - We are so used to living by the flesh. Nurturing the flesh. We are a very spoiled, pampered people. Grow up in the things of God.
1:13:00 - Participant comment - Signs that say feed your beast.
1:13:20 - You are cultivating and nurturing that thing - voice of the flesh - the beast - the carnal nature.
1:13:40 - Unbridled passion in an area opens up your soul to other dictates of the flesh - mentalities that are limited - to think through the flesh - to believe through the flesh - to see through the flesh. If carnality is alive in one area, then it's still alive in you. And it's going to cross over into other areas of your life. You start thinking through that unbridled passion - through that need and craving.
1:14:40 - Temperance - Live a life of temperance - a self-controlled life. It's not what I'm eating but how much. I've kept my self in that place for years. There are some things that I like that could get out of control. That thing tries to stay alive. After you have abstained you feel like you have earned the right to indulge. I don't want that in my life. I'm catering to the same desire that I want to crush.
1:15:50 - Gorging. It takes more discipline to come off of a fast in a right way.
1:17:00 - Franklin Hall's book on fasting. Read his book through grace not legalism. Preaching fasting in a legalistic way - afflicting our souls.

Fasting & Bad Attitudes

1:18:05 - v.5 - Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD? - God is not interested in you mourning the death of your flesh.
1:18:40 - v.6 - Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? - Read this through NT light. See the effects and benefits of a fast - more authority, more grace, more wisdom to move in this next list. He is bringing love into this. A true fast is when you deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow me. That's a true fast. When you live the Christian life, it's a fast to the things of the flesh. The Christian life is designed to be a total fast because you deny yourself. Fasting food helps you in that process of really coming to the place where you are denied in yourself - where you have no carnal cry. You're not eating and not cranky.
1:20:20 - Overcoming crankiness through prayer - Not problem focused prayer. Father, the truth is my life is worth the blood and I see that this thing has worked in me over the years. I was born into Adam but I don't want one effect of what I was born into to remain in my life. My life is before you - to know you more - to raise up my soul in understanding. I have no right to be cranky. I have every reason to be thankful. I was dead and yet I live... And all of the sudden crankiness is out of the picture.
1:21:00 - You will find that prayer and fasting exposes more of these weaknesses.
1:21:30 - Fasting exposes the carnal - Example of participants fasting experience - taking care of kids, cooking etc. Fasting will expose the carnal rights and privileges. The key is to recognize them. If you are just fasting towards a point in time, you won't recognize them. Works mentality. Crankiness, resentment towards spouses. Fasting exposed the mindsets.
1:25:50 - Overcoming resentment through prayer. How do you do all things to the glory of the Lord. Doing laundry. That resentment takes away the privilege of serving. Not feeling love for family. Get a grip on your soul. Father, I so appreciate my family. I so appreciate the opportunity to lay down my life to serve them and bless them. I want to be like you. You washed your disciples feet. I can wash my children's clothes. I thank you for the honor of serving them in love.
1:28:00 - Frustrations in serving family. Laundry. It becomes duty and service. Sucks the love out of the family. Kids learn the wrong things about love and serving. We love them but... Don't give yourself to dwell in frustration. You are missing the beauty of being able to pray over your family as you are throwing their clothes in the laundry. Prophesying over them. Being spiritual minded and not flesh minded. Seeing the value of them. Father, I thank...
1:29:35 - Cursing without realizing - He'll never learn - I've told Him twenty times. Frustration and nothing good is coming out of your mouth - prophesying that he will never change. The frustration comes out of self-centeredness. If you really denied yourself, could you even think that way?
1:30:45 - Conviction - Appreciate that He is making you free from you - Convictions about bad attitudes. Man, what am I doing? Father, I so thank you for the light in my life. I so thank you for my family. And you shift that gear and start appreciating that He is making you free from you. And He is causing you to see the highest value of the world around you.
1:31:30 - At the end of the rope with kids. Praying constructively. Father, I thank you that you are doing a work in my son....(more praying in faith for a child) As opposed to seeing him the way you normally see him.
1:32:45 - Selfish ambition leading to frustration - the motive behind how we behave a lot of times. Fasting is a beautiful tool to get a grip on this stuff.
1:34:00 - Participant's scenario continues - How to pray for the spouse that is not pitching in to do the daily tasks during a fast.
1:35:00 - Attitudes that impede the flow of power through our lives.
1:35:35 - This kind does not come out - it's not covering it over but rooting it out.
1:35:50 - Example scenarios.
1:36:20 - v.6 - Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? - Everything that you see in this list will be accomplished in your own life when you fast and pray. Mentalities - the right to think that way - get rooted out. Mentalities - selfishness - comparing to others - the need for fairness.
1:38:00 - Blindness towards healing - Talking about healing over the last two weeks - difficult - blindness - deafness.
1:39:00 - Objections to healing. "Well if she prayed and she is a woman of God..." These ways of thinking are found in us... These subtleties and tendencies are exposed by fasting and removed through prayer. I submit my soul in prayer, my body in fasting and come into alignment with the things of the spirit.
1:41:30 - Unfairness.
1:42:00 - Disciplining Todd's bladder
1:43:00 - Break every yoke - Right there is the will of God. God wants to break every yoke. Who is He breaking them through? You. So if one is not broken, why do we reflect that back on God?
1:43:25 - v.7 - Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? - This is all love. This is all laying down your life. This is what makes you spiritual. Not abstaining from food, etc. It's loving the world around you.
1:44:00 - Don't hide yourself from people - becoming introverted - becoming an island - pursuing God apart from others. That's a terrible place. A lot of times it is because they are so hurt by people - hiding themselves.
1:45:20 - When you start to lay down your life and do these things then...
1:45:25 - v.8 - Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. - All of the sudden the heart of God, expressed and revealed becomes your reality and it can't go unnoticed.
1:45:50 - Summary - So fasting is not something that I'm doing to find favor with God. I have favor with God. Fasting gets me into the heart of God - crushes and kills the carnal nature - the indulgence of the flesh - exposes mentalities that are nonproductive and detrimental to truth.
➡ 1:46:05 - When we come back we are going to look at a couple of NT scriptures and wrap this topic up.

1:46:15 - BREAK

Then They Shall Fast

1:46:25 - Jesus was asked "Why aren't your disciples fasting?" It was a big deal because of the legalism in that day. Recorded in 3 of 4 gospels. It seems pretty important to God. Mt. 9, Mark 2, Luke 18:12.
1:48:20 - Mt. 9 - v.14 - Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? - Often.
1:48:30 - v.15 - And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast. - Now this is powerful... He goes right into this teaching...
1:48:45 - v.16 - No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. -
1:50:00 - Jesus is with them everyday. And everyday He is pouring into them. But there will be a day when He is taken away and they are going to fast.
1:50:30 - Possible jealousies among the disciples.
1:51:20 - In Mt. 17 Jesus isn't there and He's not giving them a direct command. And now they are left at the mercy of their own minds and understandings. They pray and it doesn't happen.
1:51:50 - David Hogan - 1st person raised from the dead - failure - 14 yr old boy pulled out of river - The Lord said pray for him. I will raise him from the dead. But I turned and walked away. Why? Because of the faces of men - the fear of man. But not any more.
1:53:15 - Thank God for mercy. That we can learn from our mistakes.
1:53:25 - No condemnation in fasting - When you step out to fast just know that you can't fail and do wrong. If you break your fast early... I'm not giving permission to your flesh. The fact that you are pursuing in this direction and growing is a big deal. Don't be condemned if you don't make it to where you wanted. God's not disappointed when you break your fast. He's excited that you are even pursuing to grow.
1:54:40 - Grace is what empowers you - takes you to the finish line. Knowing that God loves me - is for me... I'm not under the pressure that I used to be under. There is a lot of liberty in my life. It's not a permission for weakness of the flesh. No, it's God, I thank you that you are in this. You are with me. I thank you that your grace is taking me through. And I thank you that you are building strength in my life and you are crushing this voice of the flesh - this carnal cry - this passion - this unbridled desire - this furnace that I have fed my whole life. You are quenching it. And I thank you for your love. And through prayer you are crossing hurdles that you never made it over before because you understand that He is with you. And you are not doing it for Him. You are doing it with Him.
1:56:00 - If you are doing it for Him, you will feel like you have failed. You are not fasting for the Lord. You are fasting for your own soul's sake.
1:56:20 - Not being able to fast - diabetes, other reasons. Do whatever you can step out and do. Daniel fasting. Step out to believe for healing. Speak life to your own body.
1:57:00 - Fear of failure - It's never about failing. It's always about growing. And because we think it's about failing, we fail to step out and grow. It's not a method. It's a lifestyle of love and we are growing in Him.
1:57:50 - Thinking self-centeredly and how it affects your life.
1:58:20 - Working in warehouse - despised it - miserable. Resentment towards family. Self-consumed. I felt like they owed me. When I got saved I appreciated the honor of working. Union - bosses took advantage. Giving rights away. Problems with co-workers. Doing to much.
2:01:25 - Supervisor saved. Saw the pressure that Dan was put under. I don't know how you live the way you do. Can we talk.
2:02:20 - There is a place for thanksgiving and making the most of the situation - every opportunity. Christianity is not designed to pacify the flesh. It's designed to crucify the flesh.
2:03:00 - You are the light in darkness - Going to church and yet having the same mindset as everyone else - the same complaint life. What is significant then about your Christianity? It just boils down to a belief system that you believe in and they don't. Because your lives, generally are the same. It was never designed to be that way. You are light in dark places. You're love in the midst of hate. You're selfless in the midst of selfishness. Peace in the midst of contention. Mercy in the midst of the unmerciful.
2:03:50 - Complaining - Participant comment - people complaining when they don't have work and then complaining when they do have work.
2:04:05 - That's part of the fall - not normal. It's deception and a self-serving mindset.
2:04:25 - We have it so good because of Him.
2:04:35 - v.16 - No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. -
2:04:40 - v.17 - Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. - So Jesus is coming to introduce the new. He is revealing the dispensation of grace that is just about to come through His cross. And He is transforming the mindsets of men.
2:05:00 - You can't take the mindset of the law and the works to find favor with God and connect it to this grace that we live by. We're saved by grace through faith.
2:05:25 - Old religion vs. New grace - Paul was so persecuted because he said - I am saved and right with God because He says so. That didn't fly in their culture and society. When he says, "I'm not ashamed of the gospel..." - Rom. 1:16. He's talking to a culture that is trapped in religion. He's saying, "I'm not ashamed to say that I believe in something that saves me by grace and not my works." I'm not ashamed that God is saving me through the work of Jesus because He loves me - not based on my works.
2:06:25 - If it's by works, there's a debt to be paid. If it's by grace then there is no debt.
2:06:50 - They will fast one day but it's not to find favor with God. They already have favor with God. He's changing the "why" behind our lives.
2:07:15 - New wine in new wineskins. So if there is a new covenant of grace of God towards men through Jesus Christ, then there has to be a new "why" behind our lives - a new way that we live from. And in that day they will fast so that they stay in tune, suppress every thing about the flesh, works, pride, achievement, accomplishment, earnings, doing to be.

When You Fast

2:08:20 - Mt. 6 - When you give... He's talking about your motive for doing things - charitable giving, etc. Reward being what you receive from men. How can you give away all of your good and give your body to be burned and it be worth nothing? - 1 Cor. 13 Why is it not worth anything? Because it wasn't done from love. You did it for your own name - for your own legacy - to get a statue built for your own name. It has to do with self and it's worth a big fat zero. So don't blow a trumpet so that men see that you are amazing. See that you are amazing that you are worth the blood of Jesus.
2:09:50 - v.3-4 - But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. - That's a super pure place.
2:10:10 - When you pray... - They like to be seen. They have their reward. Pray in secret. Rewarded in the open.
2:10:30 - Fasting - v.16 - Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. - When you fast, not if you fast. It's your privilege to fast. And in the level of faith you will begin to receive grace. Even if it's something small. Step out and catch the joy of communing.
2:11:30 - Don't set a goal that you can fail. Just start to fast.
2:11:40 - Fasting in Feb. - I didn't have a goal. Don't come under the law in your mindset. Mindset of grace.
2:13:00 - v.17 - But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; - It's not to draw attention or admiration.
2:13:40 - Mrs. Hogan fasts. Fasts 21 days every month he is gone. Dying in the jungle - got lost - 4 wheel vehicle came along - laying on ground dying - wife interceding. Help came right when they were dying. Not about fear and anexiety.
2:16:10 - When you fast - Main reason I turned you there - Not if you fast, but when you fast. He's expecting us to fast. He's expecting us in our surrendered life - denying ourselves - to understand this concept - that we want to renew ourselves in the spirit of our minds. And we don't want those hidden things of the heart to be nipping us in the bud all the time - little selfishnesses, little unfairnesses, unbeliefs, mindsets of anxiety, fear, self-preservation... Do you want those to stay alive and be mixed in with the gospel? No.
2:17:50 - He is talking to us - This was in the sermon on the mount so He is talking to everyone. He's talking to the crowd.
2:18:10 - v.18 - That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly. - Why would we walk around looking sad when in fasting we are crushing that very mindset? That defeats the whole purpose of the fast. The whole purpose of fasting is to crush the cry of the flesh and to subdue those desires. Get Spirit conscious, Spirit minded and walk through your life by the Spirit.

Voice of the Flesh

2:18:50 - Gal. 5 - v.16 - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. -
2:19:20 - Reading Romans 7 out of context - we're always going to live by the flesh.
2:19:30 - So the flesh is trying to raise up a voice in your life to where its voice is louder than your heartcry for God - for surrender, love, mercy, forgive. The voice of the flesh has audience with your soul and tells your soul why you shouldn't forgive. And all of the sudden you are agreeing with it and going "Yeah!" And there is a way that seems right then.
2:20:05 - Walk in the Spirit - in tune with the mind of God - you're walking by grace. You understand that your life is a privilege. Not frustrated but thankful. Wanting nothing. That's a good place to live.
2:20:30 - Power of thankfulness.
2:20:55 - Voice of the flesh - and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. - Which means that the flesh has a suggestion - a voice - an enticement. And those things come back and try to test you.
2:21:10 - Rightness mentality. Unfairness. Just become love.
2:22:20 - Sentimental human love - expressions of love.
2:22:45 - v.17 - For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. - There was only an awareness of the difference between the flesh and the spirit when man ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Man's spirit, soul and flesh were in agreement up to that point - before sin. I thank God that the redemption of Jesus has not left me bound to the dictates of the flesh. Father, I thank you that I am a man of the Spirit - a spirit man and I have a soul and my flesh follows along and says, "Yes, sir!" (more)
2:23:45 - The flesh is not weak when you watch and pray - Jesus didn't say that your flesh is weak in the sense of damning you to be weak in the flesh. He said, "Watch and pray. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak." - Mt. 26:41. So if watch and pray, what are you doing? Not fulfilling the lusts of the flesh. So the flesh is not weak then.
2:24:20 - Your flesh has a voice. It screams when you have been fasting for a few days.
2:24:50 - v.17 - Becoming selfless - contrary to one another - There is a place where the flesh and spirit need to be brought into alignment - where our flesh can be trained through fasting to where we become selfless. Jesus was selfless. So His flesh was not weak. He was beat and battered and didn't buckle. It wasn't fair at all and yet He didn't cave. He was selfless. Unfairness.
2:25:45 - Look to Jesus - You always have to look to Jesus - the author and finisher of your faith. You look unto Him. 2:26:25 - Feeling sorry for yourself. Not relevant now.
2:27:50 - v.17 - Apart from Him, I am going to mess up. Flesh pulls in another direction. Romans 7 - that's Paul without Christ. [Extended discussion of the flesh in Romans 7]
2:29:30 - v.18 - But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. - That means that if God's love touches you and begins to motivate you... You can't fail if you step out in fasting because you are not under the law. Even if you stumble you jump up and run to Daddy.
2:30:00 - Do we sin because we are not under the law? Of course not. But it's not about failing. It's about growing up into Him.
2:30:30 - [Stopping short scenario in fasting - receiving grace - not condemnation]
2:31:20 - The works of the flesh - v.19-21 - Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. -

Adultery

2:31:30 - Adultery - only happens because you are thinking for yourself. Self-serving lies.
2:32:00 - God is answering our prayer - our spouses neglected - needed a season of healing. I strongly corrected. They are hurt - with failed expectations. Is this love or needs driven. Selfishness is a horrible thing.
2:33:50 - Everything else on this list is because of selfishness.
2:33:55 - Adultery continued...
2:34:40 - The church enables this with - prayer to go to heaven mentality instead of transformation mentality.

* * *

2:34:50 - Fasting - defensiveness of others when they find out you are fasting.
2:36:15 - v.19-21 - Perilous times scriptures - I read those lists to keep myself sober. I don't want those things in my life.
2:37:00 - You are not fasting because you are such a mess. You are fasting because you want to know Him more. Because of the privilege of getting my mind renewed.
2:37:15 - v.22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. - Love is the fulfillment of the law.
2:37:40 - v.24 - And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. - It doesn't just relate to sexual sin. It means "rightness", jealousy, selfishness, pride, "you shouldn't have", "he said, she said".
2:38:10 - The process of prayer and fasting is a tool that helps you to crucify the flesh and make sure he is dead and stays dead. Bury him deep enough and cover him with enough dirt that you don't practice the resurrection of the dead.
2:38:30 - v.25-26 - If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the SpiritLet us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. -
2:38:50 - Conceit - works at root. Comparing to one another.
